I love new business ideas and when I heard about Cereality in Santa Cruz I knew this was a new business idea with a niche market and that Cereality would be appreciated for what they had to offer.
A few days ago I said to my mom I’ll take you for a bowl of Grapenuts and she proceeds to tell me the bad news. Why is it that parents are always to give you the bad news, no matter how old you are?
She tells me that Cereality closed and we were out of luck for a large size so we’ll have to mosey on over to Trader’s for our dose of cereal. I’m so ‘anti’ right now I was not walking to Trader’s when all I wanted was a large bowl from Cereality!
How could you close this amazing new business idea? This new business idea cloaked in 2{75f7d6826a5ae8a0173b8a8159b63ceac1acc20c4a43d07670d992b80bd52f77} milk, carbohydrates, sugar, corn syrup and peanuts was a thing of the past and suddenly this new business idea didn’t seem to be catching on like I thought it would in of all places, Santa Cruz, CA.
Mmmm… what was not working? Is it the business model? Is it the franchise owner? Is it the fact that there are too many rules to make any money? Is it because nobody wants to serve cereal? (heck no! there were lots of cereal server want to be’s). So what was it that made this new business idea fail in one of the richest areas in California? For goodness sakes there’s a UC Campus there ~ that’s all they eat when they’re in college: cereal!!
My thought is that the franchiser went a little too fast for the business model. Remember the Sock Place?? Remember, all they sold was socks, nylons, sock stuff, shoe stuff, and feet stuff? Great idea, but when the stores started popping up everywhere all of a sudden the business model couldn’t afford the growth and the entire franchise failed. There were socks for sale everywhere! It was a sock nightmare.
It’s the same thing when you go into network marketing as a professional entrepreneur. Your first time around you want to learn and conquer everything. You buy into every MLM, every opportunity, you get sucked into the product and you forget the most simple of factors: YOU!
How much are YOU willing to do to create your business the way you see it in the future? The business model of a lot of franchises have this incredible need to gobble up their niche market and then sell out for a fortune. The one thing they didn’t think of is that the Lottery mentality is rampant and even in business it never gets rewarded.
Entrepreneurialism is 99{75f7d6826a5ae8a0173b8a8159b63ceac1acc20c4a43d07670d992b80bd52f77} perspiration and 1{75f7d6826a5ae8a0173b8a8159b63ceac1acc20c4a43d07670d992b80bd52f77} inspiration. Thomas Edison said that…I believe. Regardless, it’s true. Do you think Zappo’s main reason for creating an empire was to sell out to Amazon within 14 months of making a small fortune on their niche? Everything about Zappo’s embodies successful entrepreneurial spirit. So should you!
If you believe in a new business idea and it doesn’t work does that mean you don’t work? Absolutely not. It means you find another new business idea, or you create a new business idea or you buy into a new business idea and you compound your efforts with the effort of your Team and your Community that surround you.
It’s not a new business idea that we need it’s a new way of thinking about ourselves and how we mirror our business opportunity and if that business opportunity is schematic and adds absolutely no value to your clients your new business idea is going to be belly up within a very short period of time.
Invest in yourself is what I’m saying here. You’re the Business Idea and if there’s anyone that’s going to make that new business idea work it’ll be YOU!
Upon hearing about the closing of Cereality my cereal heart broke and I felt despondent about the future of cereal and its’ effect on our society. What happened to enjoying a bowl of cereal? JJ (John Jackson) likes to eat Cheerio’s Cereal with his kids and I was really happy when I found out Cereality had my Grape Nuts ~ Original, no less.
